Hungary event highlights 2016

Hungary hosts a lots of annual festivals and events. Here are the highlights of the 2016 event calendar:


  • "Busójárás" Spring-Rites Festival

4-9th February 2016 • Mohács: Pannonia

An event called "busójárás", which has been part of the UNESCO intellectual world heritage since 2009, takes place in Mohács where various groups enter the central square through the main street at the bang of the busó cannon and a street carnival begins. The people of Mohács celebrate the carnival also on the Tuesday of the carnival week saying good-bye to the cold season by lighting and dancing around a bonfire placed at the main square where they burn a coffin, symbolizing the winter.




  • Hollókő Easter Festival

26-28th March 2016 • Hollókő: Eger-Tokaj Wine Region

Since 1987, Hollókő has been part of the UNESCO world heritage. The revival of Palóc folk traditions, the village life of past times is demonstrated together with Easter folk customs. One can try painting eggs, jiggering and many other handcrafts. Easter can certainly not pass without the tradition of sprinkling of the girls by the boys from buckets of water.



  • Budapest Spring Festival

8-24th April 2016 Budapest: Budapest and Surroundings

The Budapest Spring Festival has been the greatest cultural festival of Hungary for 30 years. This series of events is also a significant international event. In eleven days of the 32nd Spring Festival, at 30 venues all over the Hungarian capital, approximately 100 events took place. The festival offers classical music concerts and jazz nights, as well as theatre performances, open-air concerts and other festival-like events.

  • Herdsmen's Festival – National Herdsmen's Competition and Meeting

14th May 2016 • Hortobágy: The Puszta and Lake Tisza

Each year on Pentecost Saturday, herdsmen of grey cattle and arriving from various corners of the country gather in the Animal Park of Puszta to compete with each other and to show off their festive outfits. Visitors can satisfy their appetite with meals prepared at the cookery contest (goulash, mangalica stew) and buy gifts from the region's craftsmen.

  • International Harley-Davidson Festival

8-12th June 2016 - Alsóörs: Lake Balaton

This is Hungary's largest of motorbike owners meeting where, for five days a quality music programme is offered, along with the motor show. There will be a spectacular Harley-Davidson fashion show, stunt show and other breath-taking bike programmes, and of course fireworks that shouldn't be missed either. The highlight of the festival is the motorbike parade on Saturday.

  • Budapest Summer Festival

12th June – 30th August 2016 - Budapest: Budapest and Surroundings

The Open-air Stage of Margaret Island is the home of premiers, musicals, operas, dance shows and concerts. At the Városmajor Open-Air Stage, according to the tradition, "Pest moves to Buda". At the ruins of Saint Margaret chapel and at the Interactive Tale Stage, Renaissance mornings, popular tales and interactive games await the youngest audience.

  • VOLT Festival

29th June – 2nd July 2016 • Sopron: Pannonia

This festival has one of the oldest traditions among Hungary's provincial festivals, where both Hungarian and international pop stars are invited.  Apart from the music programmes, the festival offers a significant cultural programme every year, with a free academy and theatre performances, as well as children and family programmes in the mornings.




  • Balaton Sound

6-10th July 2016 • Zamárdi: Lake Balaton

A festival with world-famous DJs, performers and bands at the beach of Balaton with colourful accompanying programmes. Entry is with daily tickets or with a four-day ticket. An outstanding experience not only for the fans of electronic and dance music, but for everyone who enjoys listening to music and being on the beach. The organizers of Balaton Sound wanted to create a new and unique type of music festival to Hungary.


  • International Palace Games of Visegrád

8-10th July 2016 - Visegrád: Budapest and Surroundings

The Visegrád International Palace Games have been organised to commemorate the Visegrád kings' meeting of 1335. Besides the tournament, historical music and dance, performances, a fair, comedy and puppet shows, many exhibitions will take place as well. At the sports field, horse and foot soldier battle; there is also a falconer and dance show, Italian guidons' programme, pennon breaking and a fortress battle.

  • Festival of the Wine Egri Bikavér on St. Donatus Day

8-10th July 2016 • Eger: Eger-Tokaj Wine Region

The festivities of one of the most famous wines of Hungary, Egri Bikavér. More than 30 restaurants and the same number of wine cellars offer specialties with the Bikavér wines which have been chosen by the professional jury's recommendations. The programme is accompanied by concerts and cultural programmes.


  • Hungarian Formula 1 Grand Prix

24-26th July 2016 • Mogyoród: Budapest and Surroundings

The Hungarian Grand Prix has been organised at the Hungaroring circuit near Budapest since 1986. After minor modifications, in 2003. the track has acquired its current form, the length of which is 4,381 meters. Due to its narrow track sections and sharp curves overtaking is very difficult, therefore, the Hungaroring is often compared to the Monaco track.

  • Sziget Festival

10-17th August 2016 • Budapest: Budapest and Surroundings

On an island in the middle of the Hungarian capital, sorrounded by beautiful trees, thousands of young people meet to enjoy the Sziget Festival. What is offered by the festival is also extraordinary: apart from the variety of music genres dozens of programs are organized, from street theatres to circus, from contemporary dance to exhibitions. This is the place where young people make friends and maybe even fall in love.

A one week fiesta with the contribution of world stars and Hungarian artists. One sorrounded by flowers and extraordinary bouquets.

  • Festival of Folk Arts

18-21st August 2016 • Budapest: Budapest and Surroundings

In the castle of Buda craftsmen present the tricks of various traditional trades, involving the audience in the process of creation. On the stage, traditional Hungarian and foreign musicians, dancers and orchestras perform. On the 20th of August, the festival of Saint Stephen is celebrated by a procession of masters and consecration of bread.

  • Jewish Cultural Festival

28th August – 4th September 2016 • Budapest: Budapest and Surroundings

The main objective of the festival is to introduce the Jewish culture and to emphasise with the variety of programmes the importance of different cultures living together in peace. The multicultural series of programmes about the Hungarian and Jewish heritage, as well as also accepting the traditions of other people is the biggest Jewish festival in Europe.

  • Budapest Wine Festival

8-11th September 2016 • Budapest: Budapest and Surroundings

This is one of the highest ranking and most popular professional events and artistic festivals of Central Europe that is held together by one of the oldest produce of mankind, wine. At this event, from year to year, tens of thousands of people learn about the art of civilized wine consumption, meet with wine makers and taste the specialties of Hungarian gastronomy and listen to folk music.

  • Wizz Air Budapest Half Marathon

11th September 2016 • Budapest: Budapest and Surroundings

The biggest half marathon in Cenral-Europe. Run with over 16.000 athletes and enjoy the incredible scenery. Course leads through the centre of Budapest, through the famous Andrassy Boulevard and the Chain Bridge. Admire the Buda Castle panorama from the bank of the river Danube and marvel the panorama of Pest as well with Europe's second largest Parliament building. Budapest, the city of bridges: either cross the bridges, or run under them, see them all. Distances: half marathon, 21 km relay for 2, 21 km in a trio, Fun Run

  • Tokaj-Hegyalja Vintage Days

30th September - 2nd October 2016 • Eger: Tokaj Wine Region

This is the famous vintage day of Hungary's emblematic wine region, made unforgettable by the procession and the folk and traditional bands that play. Apart from the introduction of wines and the winners of the previous years' wine contests, there is an opportunity to taste wine specialities, visit cellars and get an idea of how the famous Tokaji wines are made.


  • CAFe Budapest Contemrporary Arts Festival 

2-18th October 2016 • Budapest: Budapest and Surroundings

The main objective of the festival is to contribute to the realization of the concept „Budapest as a festival city" by inviting internationally ranked performances and local performers capable of drawing international attention and to enhance Budapest's European cultural rank and its image as a significant European cultural centre.

  • Red Wine Festival

7-9th October 2016 • Villány: Pannonia

Villány is the homeland of the full, fiery red wine: during the vintage days, in the town, colourful programmes await those interested in wine tasting. The main attraction is the vintage procession with the colourful selection of horsemen, carriages, wine orders, dance groups, music groups and choirs. Miraculous nature, climate, friendly people living here, as well as the excellent-quality wine have made this settlement famous.

  • SPAR Budapest Marathon

9th October 2016 • Budapest: Budapest and Surroundings

Lovers of running can join the race, and run through the most beautiful parts of the city. The selection is wide; from the official marathon distance of 42 km to a 600 metre run, everyone can find their favourite running distance. Fans of shorter distances can also run Mini-marathons and Maratonka but walkers are also welcome at the event and families can complete the 600-metre Family Running Race together.

  • XI. Gödöllő Liszt Festival

21-23rd October 2016 • Gödöllő: Budapest and Surroundings

According to various sources, Ferenc Liszt was the favourite composer of Elisabeth, the wife of the Habsburg king, Franz Josef I. At the crowning in Mathias Church, the Crowning Mess specifically composed by Ferenc Liszt for this occasion was presented. The festival's concerts are linked to Ferenc Liszt's birthday, on October 22nd every year.

November to December

  • Budapest Christmas Fair

24th November- 31st December 2016 • Budapest: Budapest and Surroundings

The Budapest Christmas Fair has become the most important series of programmes of the winter period also known and recognised at international level. Folk and applied artists sell their goods especially Christmas gifts made from natural materials with original handicraft technique. The quality of the goods is guaranteed by the association of Folkloric Unions. The atmosphere is also traditionally festive with the scent of gingerbread, cinnamon, mulled wine and pine tree, all over.

  • Advent Feast at the Basilica

26th November- 31st December 2016 • Budapest: Budapest and Surroundings

During the series of events "Advent Feast at the Basilica" you can find a fascinating activity for every evening. We are waiting for the children with free ice rink with a huge Christmas tree in the middle of it. Every night of the fair the building of the Basilica will be decorated with stunning light painting according to the Advent spirit.
